Important auto body repair tips

One of the most important thing that you must consider when looking for a auto body facility is their ability to paint your car.  After they successfully fix the dents and bumps on your car, the paint job must match the existing or surround color of the automobile.  The color of one’s car is achieve by a combination of colors whose formula can be obtained from the manufacture of the automobile.  Even with the right color combination, painting can be one of the hardest things to do correctly.  It involves the right combination of skills and experience.  So don’t just ask about their ability to fix dents, as to see how their paint jobs looks, and the cars that they have fixed to get good reference and an idea of what their end product looks like.

Smog check

I am noticing that more and more auto body shops are adding the ability to do smog check at their facilities.  I think this is great because we all need to get a smog check to complete our car registration.  Body shops are all over the place so its convenient and cheaper to add smog certification services to their location whereas it would cost some one a lot of money to open up a place to do smog checks only.  It a good trend that I am noticing around Chicago.

Auto repair tips

The best tip when it comes to getting your automobile repair is knowing your limitations.  Knowledge what you know about cars and what you don’t know.  If you know nothing about fixing your autobody ask someone who does.  Luckily, learning the basic is not hard to do.  Typically, one of the basic issues that most driving run into is fluid leaks.  Just by regularly checking our cars, break, water, fluids when help you understand what your car needs to maintain it and help avoid those issues.  If you suspect your car has a leak, places some newspapers underneath your car and leave it there over night.  The next day, and see if you notice an leaks.  If so go to a mechanic and tell them what you found.  Looking at the type of liquid that leaks out of your car can tell you the problem that you are having.  A sticky and dark liquid may be oil.

There will be time when you will need a mechanic.  Whenever you visit a mechanic, you need to appear knowledgeable about your car. If you know how to manage the car well, you must also be quick when it comes to leakages. Accidents come in an untimely hour. You can best prevent accidents when you know the basics in car repair.

Valve job

A valve job is the process of removing the cylinder head(s) from the engine so the valves, guides and seats can be refurbished to restore compression and oil control. A valve job can become necessary when an engine reaches 80,000 or more miles on it.  A valve job begins by disassembling, cleaning and inspecting the cylinder head. Cast iron heads are “Magnafluxed” to check for hairline cracks. This involves applying a strong magnetic field to the head and sprinkling iron powder on it. Cracks disrupt the magnetic field and attract the iron powder, allowing you to see the cracks.

Cracks are bad news because they can leak coolant into the combustion chamber damaging the cylinders and/or causing the engine to lose coolant and overheat. If cracks are found in any critical areas of the head, the head must either be repaired or replaced. Cracks in cast iron heads are most often repaired by “pinning” (installing a series of overlapping threaded pins). Cracks in aluminum heads are very common and can often be repaired by welding.

If a head has been repaired, you should pressure test the head to make sure there are no leaks. If there are no leaks you need to check for flatness.  Look at the surface of the head and see if it is flat so that you can seal the head gasket against the block.  Excessive warpage, roughness or any damage can cause the head gasket to fail. If the head exceeds the maximum allowable out-of-flatness specs, it must be resurfaced or replaced. Usually there’s enough metal in the head to allow for a certain amount of resurfacing.

Next come the valves, guides and seats. The guides should be checked for wear. If the valves are to be reused, they will be inspected, checked for straightness then refaced. If the seat in the head is cracked or too badly worn to be refaced, the seat must be replaced. If that isn’t possible then the entire head must be replaced. The valve springs are then  inspected and tested for proper pressure. The spring retainers, keepers and other hardware is likewise inspected. Any worn or damaged components are replaced. New valve guide seals are always used.  The valves are then installed in the head and shimmed to restore proper valve height.

Runaway Taxi

In a scene right out of a movie, a taxi crashed into the front window of a local restaurant located on W Division street.  The roads were slippery in the morning and the taxi just lost control.  No one was hurt seriously which was pretty fortunate since there were six people in the restaurant at the time of the accident.  But one person was taken away as a precaution.  I would hate to be the driver of the taxi.  He is looking at getting the restaurant repair as well as getting a auto body repair for his taxi as well.  Its not going to be cheap either.  Hopefully his insurance company will cover it all.
